August festivals for fruit and veggie lovers

To balance all the BBQ festivals throughout the summer, hot August days are also filled with many fruit and vegetable events.  These festivals are great family-fun events that entertains all ages.  People get into the spirit by wearing fruit or vegetable costumes, taste free samples, or participate in giant vegetable contests or food competitions.  What’s even better is that most of them are free to attend or at least affordable.

In Northern California,

    • It is all about the tomatoes! Woodland (8/13), Fairfield (20th), and Loomis (20-21) celebrates the tomato harvest with free festivals.  Sample the many types of tomatoes, participate in the food competitions, and enjoy the entertainment.
    • Enjoy all things vegan and vegetarian at Sacramento’s VegFest.  On the same weekend, celebrate healthy eating and many cultures by attending the 2nd Annual Banana Festival .
    • Gravenstein apple is at it’s peak in Sebastopol.  Enjoy “the sweeest little fair in Sonoma County held on August 13-14.
    • Love blackberries?  Covelo holds its 29th Annual Blackberry festival filled with great food, live music, and a 10K run.
    • Learn about the many ways to prepare the zucchini at the Zucchini Festivals on August 20 in Hayward and/or the 21st in Healdsburg. Enjoy the live music, foods, and the many activities.
    • End the last weekend in Corning’s Olive Festival.  Some of the activities planned include a parade, fun run/walk, talent show, and entertainment.

Before heading towards southern California, enjoy fresh and dried California figs at Fresno’s 8th Annual FigFest

In Southern California,

    • Enjoy free watermelon on August 12-14 at the 50th Annual Sunland-Tujunga Watermelon Festival.  Participate in the relay race or eating contests.
    • California’s oldest grape harvest festival in Rancho Cucamonga is held on August 19-21.  It is one of the few grape festivals that offers traditional grape stomps.
    • Join the community of Paso Robles on August 20th for their 8th Annual Olive Festival.  Sample many olive products from California and enjoy the free olive icecream.
